About the Owner
The ink on the diploma was not even dry before she was flying to New York City on a one-way ticket to her future. A degree in anthropology from the University of Texas at Austin describes a background rich in history of the Americas, the cultures, the arts, the societies, but she applied her knowledge to the present, embarking on a ‘study of human-kind’ in one of the nation’s largest, most multi-cultural cities.
The first major course of study came during a short-term position as a communications assistant at Origins Cosmetics, a division of Estee Lauder Companies. It was a foray into creative writing for public relations, pitching and positioning products for the media, and even organizing a speaking schedule for Mrs. Lauder during a promotional visit to California for Breast Cancer Awareness month.
Subsequent study took her to Council International Study Programs, a first step into the non-profit world, which now fits like a second skin. A Program Advisor for study abroad programs in Africa wears many hats: academic advisor to students, parents, other academic advisors, and university administrators; production coordinator for the semester- and year-long programs; immigration and consular communiqué; marketing executive, attending study abroad fairs and fielding inbound queries; point of communication for all interested parties when the school in Ghana closes due to a teacher strike, and electricity and phone lines go down due to worker strikes and/or overloaded faculties; among other responsibilities.
Returning to Texas in 2000, Cine Las Americas Film Festival roped her in during the year they also came to be known as a Media Arts Center. A trip to California to promote the festival put her in the mix with NALIP, the National Association of Latino Independent Producers, and thus began a long-term friendship.
A temporary agency put her in the fold at The National Alliance for Insurance Education & Research, where she was quickly promoted from temporary Production Assistant to permanent Marketing Program Director, in charge of her newly-formed electronic marketing initiative, and as primary marketing liaison to the 35+ entities licensed to conduct educational programs for the company nationwide.
Through years of developing a natural ability to listen to a client and understand the needs of their audience, a marketing career was sculpted and Piccolina came to life in May 2004. The rest of the story is illustrated through the pages of this website.
